Years ago I wanted to paint like Robert Bechtle. To that end, I painted a number of canvases of older American automobiles in a somewhat photorealist style. They looked pretty good, but I realized I was never going to be Bob Bechtle.
This particular painting is of a car I used to own when I was a young man in Albuquerque. I purchased it from the King Auto used car lot on Central Avenue. Their curious motto was "The king don't care." -still not sure what was meant by that.
It only got 12 mpg and when I got rid of it it definately needed a new rings on that 454 cubic-inch V-8 engine. When you floored it you could actually see the gas gauge needle going down but it definately gave you the G-force effect.
It topped out at 114 mph, as I recall.
It got me and my buddies out to Vegas in the summer even though the AC had crapped out on it years ago. We called it the "Grey Ghost".
In this painting it is shown parked in front of the World Court motel on old route 66 in Albuquerque.
